Job description
We are seeking an individual who would accompany (organ / piano) cantors and choirs at a suburban Catholic parish. The music program is well established and consists of several choirs, including a large adult choir (30 – 40 members each week). The ability and willingness to work cooperatively with the music director is of utmost importance. There is some flexibility, so this job could be a 20 – 30 hour position.
Duties are as follows:
1 Saturday mass, 5:00 pm. Every other week: rehearsal (women’s choir) at 4:00 pm before mass.
3 Sunday masses: 9:00 am, 10:30 am (adult choir) , 12:15 pm (French choir every other week)
1 rehearsal on Wednesday evening, 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm (French choir / 20 members)
1 rehearsal Thursday morning, 10:30 am – 11:30 am (Riderwood choir, Riderwood campus / 20 members)
1 rehearsal on Thursday evening, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm (adult choir / 40 members)
1 weekday mass on Wednesday, 3:00 (Riderwood campus)
Holy Week: 2 services on Holy Thursday, 2 services on Good Friday, Easter Vigil on Saturday late evening, 3 masses on Easter Day.(including brass quintet at the choir mass).
Extra services on Holy Days of obligation, Thanksgiving and Ash Wednesday.
Extra services for Sacraments: First Reconciliation (on a Saturday morning), first Communion (on a Saturday morning), Confirmation (has been on a Thursday evening the past couple of years).
Christmas Concert on the third Sunday of Advent, repeated at Riderwood the following Tuesday evening.
Funerals: 3 to 4 funerals a month, on average (additional stipends).
Weddings: a few each year (additional stipends).
Possibility of presenting an organ recital on our concert series.
Job requirements
Proficiency on the organ and the piano. The congregations are used to hearing fine organ repertoire as postludes and preludes.
Ability to accompany with musicality; ability to improvise is a plus.
Ability to work cooperatively with the music director primarily but also with instrumentalists; ability to work with cantors and rehearse with them for a few minutes prior to the beginning of the service.
Minimum education requirement: BA/BS/Undergraduate
