Living the Gospel: Pope Francis and Non-Violence
January 26 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
“Living the Gospel” is a 2018-2019 Adult Faith Formation Series
A Joint Venture of St. Camillus, Resurrection, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Churches.
The Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, a project of Pax Christi International, affirms that active nonviolence is at the heart of the vision and message of Jesus, the life of the Catholic Church, and the long-term vocation of healing and reconciling both people and the planet. This bold effort was launched at the April 2016 conference in Rome, Nonviolence and Just Peace: Contributing to the Catholic Understanding of and Commitment to Nonviolence, jointly organized by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and Pax Christi international. But how can we live nonviolently in a violent world?
This half-day session will examine the writings of Pope Francis on nonviolence with special attention to an appeal to the Catholic Church, following the Rome conference, to re-commit to the centrality of Gospel nonviolence. Its final statement outlined several initiatives including a call to continue developing Catholic social teaching on nonviolence to reflect the Gospel., integration of Gospel nonviolence explicitly into daily life, including the sacramental life; and the Gospel nonviolence work of the Church through dioceses, parishes, agencies, schools, universities, seminaries, religious orders, voluntary associations, and others; and to promote nonviolent practices and strategies.
Presenters: Marie Dennis, Co-President of Pax Christi International and Kevin Carroll of Maryknoll Office of Global Concerns.
